Origin and history

Well, “Varma” is derived from the Sanskrit word “Varman”, which means protection or armour. In older times, the term "Varman" was used to refer to people who were associated with or engaged in military or defensive occupations. Meanwhile, the name evolved into "Varma" and turned into a hereditary surname passed down through creations.

The concept of varna emerged in Hindu scriptures and society was classified into Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras. After this, Varma was placed in the Vaishya or common group because they provided services related to trade and farming.

In the medieval and British periods, many Burmese served administrative and military roles under various rulers. Still contributing to the field of agriculture as landowners and farmers.
