Origin of the Solanki

  • A historical myth says that Brahma creates Solanki from a fire pit as that’s why they are called as Agnivanshi Rajput Clan. This gives the Solanki caste a fiery and warrior spirit.
  • They started as a warrior clan in northern India in Rajasthan or near the ganges. Then around 950 CE , this clan took over Gujarat and built the Chalukya dynasty. Which they ruled over 1244 CE and established its capital at Anahilavada ,also known as Anhilpur-Patan.
  • Then around 1026 CE the solanki dynasty faced repeated attacks by Mahmud of Ghazni. And their dynasty power was lastly taken by local rulers like the Vaghela dynasty by 1244 CE.

Key Historical Figures

  • Mulraj Solanki (942-996 CE): He was the founder of the Solanki dynasty and established its capital in Anahilavada by overthrowing Samantsinh Chavda.
  • Chamunderi (995-1008 CE): Mulraj son took the throne of Solanki dynasty but he could succeed in expanding the kingdom.
  • Bhimdev I (1022-1064 CE): He constructed the Somnath temple. After it was destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni.
  • Siddhraj Jaysinh (1096-1143 CE): He was one of the prominent Solanki Kings. Who was known to conquer Malwa and gujarat.
  • Kumarapala (1143-1172 CE): He ruled in this time and stopped animal killing by following jain ways and running the solanki dynasty peacefully.
  • Mularaja II: He ruled after 1178 CE and defeated Muhammad Ghori in a big battle after its Dynasty weakened.

Solanki gotra is changed depending on the region. As,Gujarat Solanki is connected to the Chalukya dynasty (940-1244 CE) and in them gotra of Solanki such as Baghela and Sarwaria reflect the royal lineage and Jainism. Which focuses on trade and wealth. Whereas, Rajasthan Solanki is wider and exclusion in which gotra that is prominent are Togra and Ranakia which reflect warrior roots. Solanki Wedding Rituals

Solanki weddings rituals are a mix of old rajput customs with all wedding rituals such as Sagai (engagement), Mehndi (Henna) followed by Kanyadaan on the day of marriage and the Pheras around the holy fire.to make a lifetime promise.

Also, Solankis strictly follow the gotra system in which they restrict marrying within the same gotra. As to maintain the lineage purity and prevent intermarriage between the close relatives. Along with this, elders play an important role in matchmaking as they match Kundalis before marriage to check the compatibility between the matches.

Festivals and Rituals
